Gunditjmara, Wemba Wemba

Candidate for Metro Region, Jessica Mitchell

Hi, my name is Jessica Mitchell, and I am a strong proud Gunditjmara and Wemba Wemba woman, born and raised and on Wurundjeri country in Naarm (Melbourne). I have been working in the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector for 11 years across clinical, advocacy and human rights spaces and have a wealth of experience from a youth perspective. I want to acknowledge all the elders and ancestors that have come before me that have paved the way to allow me to have the opportunities I do now.

The reasoning behind me running for treaty is based on my passion in elevating youth voices. I believe that allowing youth a seat at the table, is crucial in furthering knowledge and allowing perspective for a younger cohort that is often under-represented in processes such as treaty negotiations and discussions at a higher level.

This also allows me a great opportunity to continue to keep cultural learnings alive and strong. The importance of keeping culture alive is vital for me, and in allowing me this opportunity, I am determined to continue the walk that those before me have trailblazed previously.
