Kylie Spencer

Candidate for the

Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung

My name is Kylie Spencer. I am a proud Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung Traditional Owner. I am a direct descendant of William Barak. In the 1800s, he fought against injustices upon our people’s human rights, dispossession of land, culture and lore.

2019, narrowly missing out on being voted on the inaugural Treaty Assembly, 2023, I am standing again as I want to work with the next assembly moving into stage two of the Treaty negotiating phase.

I work in the Justice space. In my private capacity my time is spent working in community on topics, including reconciliation. Also in my private capacity, I bring experience from being involved in politics at a local government level. From that I have gained negotiating skills that I think is important skills to bring along as a candidate standing for Treaty.

My passion being involved in Treaty comes from my Aboriginal family. Since European settlement, they have been advocating for protection of inherited rights to land and water which we maintain spiritually connected.

In 1835, my Ancestors signed the Batman Treaty which was never recognised. Today I stand to be part of Treaty to ensure our efforts to make Victorian Treaty is recognised and delivered for the benefit of our people.
