Candidate for the

Yorta Yorta, Wadi Wadi, Ngurai Illum Wurrung, Djadja Wurrung, Wemba Wemba and Yarra Yarra

I am Vincent Peters. My ancestral connections are through my father: I am Yorta Yorta & Wadi Wadi through my grandfather, and I am Ngurai Illum Wurrung, Djadja Wurrung, Wemba Wemba and Yarra Yarra through my grandmother.

Following dispossession and removal to Coranderrk in the 1860’s and 1870’s, I’ve mostly lived in the Melbourne suburbs, on Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung country. While others returned to traditional owner lands in the North West and the North East. Their lives were beset with lingering colonial difficulties. Some family members served as ANZACS in WW1, and WW2 – from which the United Nations and Human Rights emerged.

I believe in the underlying principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. UNDRIP is the best model to develop Treaty.

I wish to be a member of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria to use my cultural heritage knowledge, and wider history knowledge, to progress Treaties for all Victorian Aboriginal Nations and Clans. To address Free Prior and Informed Consent and Self Determination with Equity and Redress in a way that is consistent for today’s needs, from 1788, and specifically in Victoria since the 1830’s, with appropriate acknowledgement.
