William Pepper

Candidate for the

Kurnai

I am a Kurnai man. I would like to be a member of the First Peoples’ Assembly to become a voice for the people in my area.

I have lived and worked in the Gippsland region for over 40 years. In that time I have worked on many committees and been a board member on several Indigenous organisations and local businesses. I have seen what the issues and problems are for the Indigenous community in the legal sphere through extensive experience in the court system when I was a clerk of courts. I have also been a bail justice since 2001, a prison counselor and a case manager with the Office of Corrections.

I have worked with the Indigenous community extensively throughout my career. I have seen and experienced the changes throughout the community, and the fight and struggle of our people. I now work for an organisation where I can lead from the front, and I wish to do this for my people through the First Peoples’ Assembly as well.

I believe that we can use treaty as the tool to shape and empower the community to make decisions for themselves.
